MEYRICK (S. M.) & PYNE (W. H.). The costume of Great Britain - Lot 304
MEYRICK (S. M.) & PYNE (W. H.). The costume of Great Britain, designed, engraved and written by W.H. Pyne. London, Miller, 1804. In-folio, long red grain morocco, richly ornamented false-ribbed back, gold lace and wide central decoration cold-stamped on the plates, gilt roulette inside and on the cups, gilt tr. Original edition. The illustration includes a vignette on the title and 60 finely colored off-text plates, each with an explanatory note in English. The author was a painter, engraver, landscape painter and literary author. In this book he combined these three talents and invites the reader to discover the multiple facets of Great Britain at the beginning of the 19th century. He presents the costumes of royalty, clergy, soldiers, maids etc... These beautifully drawn and colourful plates bring the characters to life. Thus the reader can identify with the luxury of the clergy or the suffering endured by the working class. Beautiful freckless copy.
