CHARNOIS (Jean Charles LE VACHER de). Research on costumes a - Lot 300
CHARNOIS (Jean Charles LE VACHER de). Research on costumes and on the theatres of all nations, both ancient and modern; a useful work for painters, statuary, architects, decorators, actors, costume designers, in a word for artists of all kinds; no less useful for the study of the history of ancient times, of the morals of ancient peoples, of their customs, of their loix, and necessary for the education of adolescents. Paris, Drouhin, 1790. 2 vol. in-4 of [1] 8 -150 (1) pp., [1] 175 pp. Green morocco, spine with ornamented nerves, large gilt frieze framing the plates, gilt roulette on the cups. Original edition. The illustration in the first edition is composed of a frontispiece and 54 off-text plates, most of them in full colour, drawn by Chéry and engraved by Alix, Ridé and Sergent. The costumes are taken from ancient plays such as Iphigenia, Agamemnon, Titus, Narcissus etc. The author undertook this publication after having been forced to abandon that of Costumes et Annales des Grands Théâtres (1786-1789). This work is not finished: the publication was interrupted by the imprisonment and death of Le Vacher de Charnois during the massacres of September 1792. (Colas 717.) Precious copy in period morocco.
