LLORENTE (Juan Antonio). Critical history of the Inquisition - Lot 264
LLORENTE (Juan Antonio). Critical history of the Inquisition of Spain, from the time of its establishment by Ferdinand V to the reign of Ferdinand VII. Paris, Treuttel & Wurtz, 1817. 4 vol. in-8, half-brown basane, smooth decorated backs. Illustrated with a portrait of the author by Blanchand in frontispiece. New edition of the best known and most justly esteemed work of Father Juan-Antonio Llorente (1756-1823), secretary of the Inquisition from 1789 to 1791, who, under King Joseph, was one of the most enlightened "afrancesados": when the Inquisition was suppressed for the first time in 1809, he was charged with the task of listing and examining the archives of this particular court, which was so important in Counter-Reformation Spain. He employed a small team of secretaries to extract and copy the most important documents he came across, which formed the nucleus of his future work. It was a landmark, being the first one based on authentic and indisputable documents, but it could obviously only be published in Paris, where the author had been living in exile since the return of Ferdinand VII (the first Spanish edition was not published until 1822). The opposition he received from the ultra party was partly responsible for his departure from France. The work was obviously put on the Index as soon as it was published... Nice copy, a few scattered freckles.
