LASSAY (Armand de Madaillan de Lesparre, Marquis de). Collec - Lot 259
LASSAY (Armand de Madaillan de Lesparre, Marquis de). Collection of different things. Lausanne, Bousquet, 1756. 4 vol. in-12 marbled calf, spine ribbed and ornamented, p. of title and spine, red tufts (contemporary binding). Original edition of these tasty memoirs of the Marquis de Lassay (1652-1738). A whimsical character of the 17th and 18th centuries, the Marquis de Lassay was known for his mischievous love affairs and social mischief which earned him the nicknames "Don Juan of the Great Century" or "Gallant of the Tuileries". After having been the aide-de-camp of the Grand Condé in 1672, he inherited his father's estate in Lassay (Mayenne) in 1676. He was also the owner of an estate at Mont Canisy near Deauville (having invited Mademoiselle de Montpensier there, and realizing the discomfort of the place, he would have decided to have a house built worthy of welcoming his guest, and this in only 35 days). Man of letters, close to the libertines, he met the future Madame de Maintenon - of whom he became the protégé - during the salons of Scarron. His second wife Marianne Pajot, famous for her spirit and beauty, would have inspired, according to some, Marivaux for his Life of Marianne. The Marquis de Lassay accompanied the Princes of Condé and Conti to Austria to counter the advance of the Ottoman Empire, without the authorization of Louis XIV who held it against him and did not entrust him with any great charge afterwards. His son, Léon de Madaillan, built the Hôtel de Lassay, the present residence of the president of the National Assembly. Two used bits, some corners worn, if not very beautiful. Ex-libris of the castle of Louppy (François Théodore de Custine, count of Wiltz).
