[FUALDÈS (Case)]. History of the famous trial relating to the assassination of Mr. Fualdès. Cour d'assises de l'Aveyron. Court of Cassation. [Cour d'assises du Tarn]. Lille, Castiaux, sd. 2 parts in one vol. in-16 half calf, smooth spine decorated, red mar. title page (contemporary binding). Rare. The illustration is composed of 14 plates without text including 12 portraits of the main protagonists (including the portrait of Mrs. Manson watercolored in frontispiece), a view of the Maison Bancal and a map of the Rodez district. Scrubbed. The Fualdès affair was, along with the Peytel affair, one of the first major news stories that fascinated the 19th century. The murderer was accused of being a Bonapartist, his assailants were in the royalist movement. The first trial condemning them to death was broken at the end of 1817. Victor Hugo mentions it in chapter 169 of Les Misérables and Balzac also alludes to it.
