EDLING (Countess Roxana Skarlatovna). Memoirs of Countess Edling (née Stourdza) bridesmaid of Her Majesty Empress Elisabeth Alexéevna. Moscow, Printing House of the Holy Synod, 1888. In-8 half-maroquin long red grain, smooth spine, gilt title, place, date and monogram crowned with Chodron de Courcel on the tail (V. Champs). Second edition of these rare memoirs published only in French. The first edition was published in Paris in 1859. Granddaughter of Constantin Mourousis, Phanariot prince in the service of the Ottoman government and then Hospodar of Moldavia, favourite bridesmaid of Empress Elisabeth Alexeevna, Countess Roxana Skarlatovna Edling (1786-1844), née Sturdza, is best known for its philanthropic works with the foundation of schools and orphanages for young refugees in Odessa during the years of wars and revolutions in the Balkans, especially the Greek War of Independence (1821-1832); she was also a close friend of the Count of Kapodistrias, a great figure of Greek independence. A very fine example. Rare.
