DAVILA (Enrico Caterino). History of the Civil Wars of Franc - Lot 235
DAVILA (Enrico Caterino). History of the Civil Wars of France, containing everything that happened from the most memorable soubs the Reign of four Kings, Francis II, Charles IX, Henry III & Henry IV nicknamed The Great. Up to and including the Peace of Vervins. Written in Italian by H. C. Davila; and put in French by J. BAUDOIN. With a very comprehensive Table of Proper Names & main subjects. Second edition. Paris, Rocolet, 1647. 2 vol. in-folio de (14) ff, pp. 1-654; (1), 655-1281, 51 pp. Beautiful engraved frontispiece and portrait of the author engraved out of text. Brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated, gilt title and tomaison, double gilt fillet framing the covers (contemporary binding). This is the most remarkable work written about this period in our annals. It has been translated into several languages. Protestant writers criticize, it is true, the flattering portrait that the author has drawn of Catherine de Medici. The work, divided into fifteen books, contains an account of the events that took place from the death of Henry II in 1559 until the Peace of Vervins in 1598. Ex-libris J. Sottas (name scratched off). Bookplate torn (with missing) on the title pages. Small scattered stitches, some old marginal wet spots. Damaged bindings, worn caps and corners, cracked jaws, a loose plate.
