COURTILZ DE SANDRAS (Gatien). Memoirs of Mr. D'ARTAGNAN, cap - Lot 232
COURTILZ DE SANDRAS (Gatien). Memoirs of Mr. D'ARTAGNAN, captain lieutenant of the first company of the King's musketeers, containing many particular and secret things that happened during the reign of Louis the Great. Amsterdam, Pierre de Coup, 1715. 3 vol. in-12 of (3) ff, 564 pp., (8) ff; 636 pp., (6) ff; 598 pp., (8) ff. Marbled calf, spine with decorated nerves (contemporary binding). The author is said to have been inspired by the papers left by Charles de Baatz, seigneur d'Artagnan (1611-1673) after his death at the siege of Maastricht. These memoirs contain many facts and intrigues of the Court, including the arrest of Fouquet by d'Artagnan. Alexandre Dumas later drew inspiration from them to write the Three Musketeers. Caps, bits and corners summarily restored, freckles in the margins of some pages of volume III. Ex-libris Harry Pomeroy Davison (1867-1922, banker, president of the American Red Cross War Council in 1917 and founder of the League of Red Cross Societies) and Albert-Claude Dubrulle.
