BOULAINVILLIERS (Henri, Count of). Extract from the memoirs drawn up by the intendants of the Kingdom, by order of King Louis XIV, at the request of Mgr. the Duke of Burgundy, father of Louis XV now reigning. With historical memoirs on the former government of this monarchy up to Hugues Capet. London, Wood & Palmer, 1737. 6 volumes bound in 7 vol. in-12, blond calf, spine with ornate nerves, gilt fillet on the cups, gilt inner wheel. The illustration consists of 6 portraits in frontispiece and 6 vignettes on the titles. Boulainvilliers was an ardent defender of the feudal system and held the French monarchy responsible for the gradual decline of the privileges of the nobility, in parallel with the rise of the bourgeoisie. "L'État de la France" is sought after because it contains extracts from the stewards' memoirs, with information on the population and the various economic activities.
