[GIFT CASE] Important collection of 46 documents relating to the Cadière trial. [1731]. Strong in-folio (multiple pagination) calf, decorated spine with nerves (contemporary binding). Very good collection concerning the trial of Catherine Cadière against Father Girard who abused her. Miss Cadière became pregnant, and the "father", after having tried to make her pass for a saint, gave her several drinks to make her have an abortion and then locked her up in a convent. He repeated his actions with other young penitents, two of whom were also pregnant. To do this, he misused the doctrines of Quietism, justifying his actions with shameful maxims skillfully exploited and deceiving his victims with alleged miracles and visions of ecstasy. At the insistence of Catherine Cadière's brothers, he was accused of seduction and magic during a long trial in Aix which enthralled the crowds. But, supported by the Jesuits, he became an accuser and the parliament of Aix, which wanted him dead, sent him back to the ecclesiastical judges, who hurried to absolve him...
