VEUILLOT (Louis). Les Odeurs de Paris. Paris, Palmé, 1867. - Lot 207
VEUILLOT (Louis). Les Odeurs de Paris. Paris, Palmé, 1867. In-8 of xvi, 498 pp. brown half maroon with corners, spine ribbed with gilt fleurons with green marble mosaic pastille, gilt title, date on tail, gilt fillet on plates, gilt head (Randeynes). Rare first edition. The most famous book of the greatest catholic polemist of the 19th century, full of scandalous anecdotes. Veuillot would have liked to show that Paris "which passes for the capital of the world is a filthy cesspool... The first 2 parts of the book are devoted to the press, the 3rd part to Parisian entertainment, theatres, cafés-concerts, etc... This book aroused the strongest complaints in the world and in the newspapers because of the violence it contains. The volume was sold out in a few hours and was a premium on the night it was put on sale. It was reprinted, but with changes and deletions." Lacombe, n°1144. Key book: Pachionnard d'Auvergne for Jules Vallès; Zora for Cora Pearl; Saint-Rémy for the Duke of Morny; Lilia for George Sand; Champfleury and the realists, Fromentin, Gautier, Hugo appear here under various pseudonyms. (Vicar, VII, 1026.) Very nice copy.
