PARIS in its splendour. Monuments, views, historical scenes, - Lot 205
PARIS in its splendour. Monuments, views, historical scenes, descriptions and history. Drawings and lithographs by MM. Philippe Benoist, for the greatest number and with the help of photography. First volume. Paris, Charpentier, 1861. Large folio, half green grief of the edition, decorated spine with nerves, title and tomaison in gold letters on the plate, red tr. Complete, for this volume, the 48 large lithographs without text, printed on a tinted background and, for some of them, enhanced in color. Most of the great writers of the time collaborated, notably Prosper Mérimée and Viollet-le-Duc. The advent of photography proved fatal to landscape lithography, condemning the draftsmen of views to extinction. Paris in its splendour was in a transitional phase where large lithographs were executed from photographs thanks to the first aerial views. Small scattered freckles on the text.
