BRANDT (Gerard). Life of Michel de Ruiter, Duke, Knight, Lieutenant Admiral General of Holland & West Frisia. Where is included the Maritime History of the United Provinces, from 1652 to 1676. Translated from the Hollandois. Amsterdam, Blaeu, 1698. In-folio, granite calf, ornate ribbed back, gold roulette on the cups. 1] 2 ff.n.ch., 717 pp., 8 ff. de table. Original edition of the French translation given by Nicolas Aubin. The illustration includes a frontispiece, a portrait and 8 off-text plates some on double page engraved by Stoopendael. Michel-Adrien Van Ruyter enlisted in 1618 as a ship's boy, working ashore as an anchor and ropeman, and later became a privateer captain. Between 1631 and 1641, he sailed in Greenland, the West Indies, and off the coast of Brazil, before being given command of a Dutch ship in the fleet intended to rescue the Portuguese from the Spanish. Ruyter fought valiantly in the alliances and wars between the great European fleets. When he died, Europe paid him a unanimous tribute. Louis XIV saw in him a man who was a credit to humanity. A fine example.
