BOISSEL DE MONTVILLE (Thomas Charles Gaston). Picturesque jo - Lot 140
BOISSEL DE MONTVILLE (Thomas Charles Gaston). Picturesque journey and navigation executed on a part of the Rhône, reputed to be unnavigable. Ways to make this trip useful to trade. Paris, Du Pont, year III [1794 - 1795]. In-4, brown half calf, decorated smooth spine. 155 (1) pp. Original edition illustrated with a map and 17 off-text plates. This is a study of the project to make the Rhone navigable from Lake Geneva to Bellegarde. Boissel de Montville went down this river from Fort l'Écluse to Génissiat, in order to find the means to transport larch for shipbuilding. The work is decorated with a folding map and 17 plates, most of them engraved with etching, representing boat trips down rapids, climbing scenes, landscapes and among others a panorama from the Jura to Mont Cenis, engraved by Picquenot. Good copy in period binding, missing the top cover, corners rubbed with lack of paper, some freckles.
