[AUBIN (Nicholas)] A naval dictionary containing terms of na - Lot 139
[AUBIN (Nicholas)] A naval dictionary containing terms of navigation and naval architecture. With the rules and proportions that must be observed. Amsterdam, Brunel, 1702. In-4, granite calf, ornate spine. 1] 6 ff.n.ch., 776 pp. The illustration is composed of a frontispiece by Lamsveld, an off-text plate showing the coat of arms of Mr Anthoine Comte du Saint-Empire to whom the work is dedicated, 12 plates of pavilions, 18 off-text plates, one of which is a leaflet, and a large number of in-text figures. Original edition of this famous marine dictionary. Aubin used as sources the works of his French-speaking predecessors, but also the Dutch naval works of which he translated important extracts. In his preface, the author emphasizes the richness and extreme diversity of maritime vocabulary due to its provincial and even local variants. (Polak 225.) A fine copy, the binding of which has been carefully restored.
