POUGENS (Marie-Charles-Joseph de). Essay on the Antiquities - Lot 132
POUGENS (Marie-Charles-Joseph de). Essay on the Antiquities of the North, and the ancient northern languages. Second edition, augmented by a notice of selected works, on the Religions, History and various idioms of the ancient peoples of the North. Paris, Pougens, An VII (1799). In-8 of xvi, 152 pp. Speckled fawn half-basane with corners, smooth spine decorated with gilt filets, straw binding (contemporary binding). Pougens (1755-1833), an old-fashioned French lexicographer (i.e. a compiler without rigour or particular doctrine), echoes in this work the great movement initiated in Germany and England at the end of the 18th century and which was to lead to linguistics and comparative literature. He was one of the first in France to take an interest in the ancient Scandinavian and Germanic languages. It was not until the work of the Schlegel brothers and especially Franz Bopp's stay in Paris in the entourage of Silvestre de Sacy that these studies really developed. Scrubbed legt corners. Very good example.
