NICANDER (Charles Auguste). The Rune Sword or the Struggle o - Lot 128
NICANDER (Charles Auguste). The Rune Sword or the Struggle of Scandinavian Paganism, a tragic drama. Translated from Swedish; followed by historical, mythological and literary notes, and preceded by an Essay on the establishment and destiny of Christianity in the countries of the North; by LÉOUZON-LEDUC, author of La Finlande et de la traduction du Kalewala, épopée nationale des peuples finnois. Paris, Sagnier and Bray, 1846. In-8 decorated paperboard (post.), title label on spine, cover preserved. This first literary work by Karl August Nicander (1799-1839), whose original Swedish edition dates from 1821, tells the story of an old warrior by the name of Oldur who swears to immolate anyone who abjures the cult of ancestors and makes his son Alrik swear the same, with his rune sword as a witness to his oath. But Alrik's fiancée, Hulda, has already opened her heart to the Christian faith. In a unique battle to decide Sweden's religion, Alrik enters the race as the champion of Christ. Proclaimed the winner, he himself falls mortally wounded by the runic sword. In his preface, Léouzon-Leduc says of the author: "Nicander had been nourished by the reading of the elders, and mainly Seneca... He shows in all his works a cult of form that never fails. His verses have a depth that penetrates the soul, a harmony that enchants the ear..." Freckles in places.
