CURZON (Henri de). The Legend of Sigurd in the Edda. Reyer's Opera. Paris, Librairie Fischbacher, 1890. In-12 burgundy half-chagrin with corners, spine ribbed, gilt title, date on tail, gilt head, preserved cover (modern binding by Loutrel). The legend of the Frankish hero Sigurd (or Siegfrid or Sigurdr) narrated in the Eddas (two manuscripts also from the 13th century : a manual of initation to Nordic mythology by the Icelandic scalde Snorri Sturluson and the Codex Regius containing the great sacred and heroic poems) then in the medieval epic in Middle High German composed in the thirteenth century 'The Song of the Nibelungen' was adapted into an opera by Ernest Reyer (begun in 1862, the opera was finally created in 1884), and of course by Richard Wagner in his tetralogy of the Ring of the Nibelung. Very beautiful copy.
