Asia - Photographs. Album of photographs of the Chinese campaign on the cannonier le Balny. c. 1925. Album in-4 oblong (29 x 37 cm), binding with polychrome decoration of Chinese inspiration with title in gilt letters "Souvenir de ma campagne de Chine", with cord. 336 period prints, including a large photograph of the crew on the first plate (the rest of the photos size between 8 x 6 cm and 9 x 15 cm approximately). About thirty of the photographs are family photos, unrelated to the campaign itself. The rest of the photographs represent views of Chinese landscapes, towns and villages, scenes and monuments, views of ships, crew scenes on board and ashore, portraits of crew members or Chinese men and women. On some photos are (Chinese) corpses on the ground. They are attached: - 13 small free photographs representing cruiser views and in particular the transport of the dead on the Triumphant, - 5 large prints (24 x 18 cm) including 4 representing Halong Bay and junks, - 2 framed prints (28 x 33 cm) representing the crew of the Balny on board, - a framed colour photograph (31.5 x 51 cm) representing the cruiser Foch, - Désiré Hervé's sales booklet, - the printed booklet (in-4 bound) of Le Triomphant, 1939-1946. Album and set of personal documents of the sailor Désiré Hervé (born in 1915 in Plouisy) apprentice then Quartermaster Driver on the Foch, the Balny, Algeria, the Colbert, the Dupleix, the Panther, the Tiger, the Provence, and the Triomphant from 1932 to 1947. Commissioned in February 1921, the gunboat the Balny reached Shanghai before fighting against the Chinese on the Yangtze River in 1923 and defending the French concession in Shanghai in 1925 and evacuating the Yangtze River valley in 1927. She joined Tchungking in 1937 and was disarmed in 1941.
