With an engraved and watercoloured folding plate depicting various characters created and performed by the British actor Charles Mathews (1776-1835), inventor of the "monopolylogue" and the "one-man show". A highly talented performer, Mathews himself played several characters in his plays, amusing the audience with songs, mimics, stories and jokes. This book refers to his successful tour of America between 1822 and 1823, during which he created several characters inspired by American types (six of which are depicted in the engraving), including "Agamemnon", an African-American violin player. Fold marks on the first plate if not a very good copy of this rare and charming work.
