South Africa - KOLBE (Stone). Description... - Lot 79 - Hôtel des ventes d'Évreux
South Africa - KOLBE (Stone). Description of the Cape of Good Hope; where you can find everything about the Natural History of the Country; Religion, Customs & Uses of the Hottentots; and the Establishment of the Hollandois. From the Memoirs. Amsterdam, Catuffe, 1742. 3 vol. in-12, marbled calf, back with ornate nerves, gilt roulette on the cups. Second edition of the French translation illustrated with 5 maps and 25 off-text plates including 1 large folding view. Pierre Kolbe left Berlin in October 1704 and did not reach his goal, the Cape of Good Hope, until June 1705. Employed by the Dutch colony as district secretary, he gathered a great deal of information on the area, and provided very comprehensive observations on the customs of the Hottentots: clothing and food, religion, government and justice, agriculture (with a chapter on Cape wines), hunting and fishing, mining, surgery, marriage, childbirth, education of children, music and dance, funerals. A small Latin-Hottentot-French lexicon is also present. Volume III is the first complete essay on the fauna and flora of Cape Town. Reached of partial blindness, Kolbe returned to Germany after a stay of about ten years. This account was first published in Dutch and German in 1727 and translated into French in 1741. It was the only detailed description of the region and was republished several times. Nice copy.
