[LEPAUTE (Jean-Andre)]. Reply by Sieur Lepaute,... - Lot 45 - Hôtel des ventes d'Évreux
[LEPAUTE (Jean-Andre)]. Reply by Sieur Lepaute, King's watchmaker in Luxembourg to a writing entitled Réflexions du Sieur Le Roy l'aîné fils. sl, sd. Later handwritten copy (19th century) of 29 pp. in brown ink on one side on squared paper. Havana half-basan, smooth spine, gilt title (modern binding). Copy of the letter of the famous watchmaker Jean-André Lepaute (1720-1789) written in 1752 following the publication of a work denying the fact that he is the inventor of the one-wheel clock. This clock, marking the hours, minutes and seconds (unlike the previous three-wheel system), had been designed by the latter, with the help of his brother Jean-Baptiste, and presented to Louis XV that same year 1752. The original text (published in 1752) is very rare (only one copy has been recorded by OCLC at the BNF).
