DARWIN (Charles Robert). On the origin of... - Lot 28 - Hôtel des ventes d'Évreux
DARWIN (Charles Robert). On the origin of species by means of natural selection, or the preservation of favoured races in the struggle for life. Third edition, with additions and corrections (seventh thousand). London, John Murray, 1861. In-8 of xix, (1), 538 pp. A table leaflet out of text. Half green chagrin, spine ribbed with cold-threaded boxes, gilt title, combed tr. (contemporary binding). (Without the publisher's catalogue leaflet which is sometimes found at the end of some copies). Third edition of Darwin's seminal work, the first including An Historical Sketch of the recent progress of opinion on the Origin of Species, which the author introduced in response to criticisms that he had not given sufficient credit to the work of his predecessors in developing the theory of evolution: "[those] few naturalists . who] believe that species undergo modification, and that existing forms of life have descended by true generation from pre-existing forms". This edition also contains a valuable table (p. xi-xii) of differences and additions from the previous edition, which will be included in each subsequent edition. Qqs very lightly rubbed, very rare freckles, small tear without missing at the last index page. Nice copy. (Freeman 381.)
